Hosting your own party may feel scary enough, but what about hosting your own Disco?
"I can't do that" I hear you all shouting "I don't have the equipment!" Well, in my opinion, maybe it's time you did! Who doesnt love a good Disco, and in all honesty, why wait for a birthday to have one? Dancing is a great way to keep active and get the kids moving! My daughter's 5th birthday was coming up and she wanted a Starwars Disco. I ummed and arhhhed over whether it was a worthwhile investment to buy my own system, and over what to actually buy. I understood that while it would be useful for my business, I wanted to be able to use it at home and whatever I was going to get, I probably wasn't planning on becoming a children's party DJ so it needed to be practical! |
I could just get a disco ball...I could just get some flashy lights...or I could buy a whole system. Decisions, decisions!
I ended up investing in a whole system, a very compact, easy to travel with system that not only did the flashy lights and music, but had a microphone attachment too and to my biggest surprise... it didnt break the bank.
It was affordable, easy to use, didn't take up too much space, connected to my phone via bluetooth for the playlist and a rather funky app you could download which allowed me to control all the lights!
The moment I opened the box at home, the party began! I loved my new 'baby' and the kids were more than impressed. Swirly lights in four colours, different settings and speeds, you could even chose to synchronise the lights with the music.
The system came with a little microphone too, which isn't the best of quality, but it did for a little sing-a-long session later in the evening! I have three kids, so appart from being able to use this system for my party business, I knew I could get a lot of use from it at home. With 3 birthday parties a year to plan, we now had our own little 'party in a box' to throw into each celebration! The kids could chose their own playlists full of their favourite songs and manage their own music for their parties. |
It was a fabulous hit at my daughter's party and the light display really suited the theme!
Whats more, it has been used many time since at home! Just recently my daughter had a friend over and they declared they were going to have a princess party, raided the dressing up box, closed the curtains in her room and got me to set up the system in the corner of the room. I hardly saw them for the next two hours, they popped downstairs for a few drinks and snacks and spent the whole afternoon dancing away in her room! I think it's safe to say they slept well after all that! I have since recommended the Ion Party Block Live to all my friends, you really don't need to be an aspiring party planner or childrens entertainer to own one of these. They don't take up much space and besides, when it comes to your child's next party and they declare they want a DISCO, you can save yourself a heap of money by just pulling this machine out, letting the children organise their own music and pressing the ON button... Did I also mention you can charge it up before the party so it can be 100% cordless too? |

I am not getting any endorsements for promoting this particular product, I am just sharing my delight and joy in having discovered it and trying to help other parents see they are just as capable at running a Disco as someone like me!
The one thing I would suggest is : DO NOT START THE GAMES TOO EARLY!
Let the kids arrive, turn up the music and let them find their space, their friends and confidence to start dancing and enjoying themselves. As soon as you start games, you can be expected to continue providing the entertainment. The idea of a Disco is that dancing and free play is the entertainment. Cover the dance floor with lots of balloons and buy some of those light up necklaces and bracelets or some glowsticks, the kids will enjoy throwing the balloons around and rushing about with their glowing accessories!
What about the games? Here are my top 5 go to games at a Disco...
Limbo
Do not worry if you don't have a Limbo pole, you can use anything from a scarf, to a skipping rope. The idea is that the children just have to shimmy their way under it until it is no longer possible.
Musical Statues
A must at any Disco!
Conga Snake
Who doesnt love the conga? Kids will love weaving around their friends in this great little game.
Show Us Your Groovy Moves
In a circle, go round and get each child to show off a funky move, everyone has to do their best to copy this move. Keep going round the circle until the music stops.
Action Songs
Chacha slide, Macarena, Ketchup song, 5, 6, 7, 8, Whip Nae Nae, Birdie Song, Superman Song... Some of these songs may be a little old fashioned but kids ARE kids and love a silly dance about, this is your chance (or maybe, if you have a willing helper) to show the kids these fun filled action songs that you probably enjoyed yourself at some stage of your life!
The biggest tip I can give, is ....Let your hair down and just have fun!
